Blog 10: Identity Formation
Adolescence is a time of great transition in life. It is during this time that teens decide who they are and what their place is in the world. This is also a time when they consider their self-image and how it compares to the image they are outwardly projecting. Often teenagers will try out roles and decisions like shoes, trying roles on to see if they fit right. Some may, while others require walking around in them a bit.
Self-esteem plays a major role as it determines how comfortable one feels in his/ her own skin outside of their peer group.
James Marcia’s four stages of identity including Achievement, Foreclosure, Moratorium, and Diffusion describe the means in which teens come to decide their role in life through trial and error, deep consideration, exploration, abstention, and outside influence.Â
Influences upon one’s role in life include family, ethnicity, peer groups, and gender.
